There will probably be an overlap of projects from one day to the other and we will build up our repertoire of ideas as the week progresses. Monday morning will start with introductions. There will be short critiques at the end of each day as well as a wind-up and overview on Friday. First-day paintings will be of still life set up by the instructor which is very helpful in demonstrating the topics. Subjects of painting Tuesday to Friday will be up to the individual artist, whether from photographs; still life or en plein air sketches. Tatianna will share her intuitive approach in the process of painting and how she melds this with the knowledge she has acquired from years of painting.
Monday: Colour Value
Morning Exercise will include small studio paintings with an emphasis on the psychology of colour and the relationships of warm and cool colours to each other and how they interact, with a look at achromatic and monochromatic paintings. We will be underpainting our canvasses this morning as well and look at the reasons for this. This may go into the afternoon before we start our own painting of choice.
Tuesday: Positive and Negative Space
Morning exercise will include small studio paintings with an emphasis on positive and negative space emphasizing the importance of negative space. The afternoon will be an open studio with each artist working on their own painting. Personal attention and feedback is an important element at this stage.
Wednesday: Squint and focus on main shapes.
Morning exercise will include painting a landscape from front to back. This exercise demonstrates squinting and focusing on main shapes with a look to loosening up. Once this project is completed, we will continue to work on our own painting of choice.
Thursday: Create Texture
Morning exercise will include various techniques exploring the effect of varying brush strokes; the use of gels and glazing and scumbling. Once this project is completed, we will continue to work on our own painting of choice.
Friday: As this is the last day, the full day is an open studio. Students will be able to use the techniques and ideas discussed and presented earlier in the week and implement these into their work if they wish. Today’s plan will be student-driven, depending on students’ needs
