This is a felting course for absolute beginner felters. Wet felting is a method of creating art using wool as your medium. This felting method is thousands of years old and has a rich history in many cultures. In this course you will talk about wool, play with wool, get wool wet and have fun! Leah Cathleen will take you step-by-step through the processes that are required for creating 2D and 3D felt pieces. We will start with the basics and improve technique and knowledge as the week progresses. The focus of this course is on process over product. We’ll discuss different breeds of sheep and their unique wool properties and explore adding silk, bamboo, wool curls and other fibres to the wool. Students will make a collection of sample pieces highlighting the unique, natural properties of wool. By the end of the week, each participant will use their new-found knowledge to make a 3D felted bowl or vessel. Wet felting is a hands-on, sometimes messy art process. Wear comfortable clothes that you can get wet and not worry about. Barbara Leighton, founder of the Leighton Art Centre, believed that every person is an artist - they just needed to find their right medium. Perhaps wool is yours. Join us for this beginner’s course and find out!
